Course Overview

Assessment, Not Impressions

Most funding failures are readiness failures, not business failures. This course teaches a structured readiness assessment that produces a defensible verdict and a prioritised gap map — valuable from both sides of the table.

An investor or advisor uses the method to screen companies and focus diligence. A founder or SME leader uses it to see their business as capital sees it — before capital does.

Every grade is justified with observable evidence, so two assessors reach similar conclusions about the same company. The output is one of three verdicts: screen out, fix-then-raise (with a prioritised roadmap), or raise now.

Learning Outcomes

What You Will Be Able to Do

OUTCOME 1

Explain what investment readiness actually is — and why most funding failures are readiness failures, not business failures.

OUTCOME 2

Assess a company across the Five Readiness Pillars using defined, observable evidence rather than impressions.

OUTCOME 3

Grade each pillar on the four-level Readiness Scale and justify every grade with evidence.

OUTCOME 4

Produce a Readiness Index and gap map that shows, at a glance, where a company stands and what blocks investment.

OUTCOME 5

Turn an assessment into a defensible verdict and a prioritised readiness roadmap — screen out, fix-then-raise, or raise now.

Signature Framework

The Readiness Gate

Five pillars define what you assess; a four-level scale defines how you grade; the Readiness Index and gate rule turn grades into a verdict. A company is only as ready as its weakest pillar.

PILLAR 1

Governance & Structure

Legal form, ownership clarity, decision-making, records, basic controls.

PILLAR 2

Financial Readiness

Reliable accounts, unit economics, projections that survive scrutiny, cash discipline.

PILLAR 3

Operational & Team

Delivery capability, key-person exposure, documented processes, the team behind the founder.

PILLAR 4

Market & Traction

Evidence of real demand, durable traction versus vanity metrics, competitive position.

PILLAR 5

Deal Readiness

The investment story, documentation and data room, realistic valuation, owner alignment.

THE SCALE

Four Levels, One Gate

Unready · Emerging · Prepared · Investor-Grade. A single Level-1 pillar blocks the gate — no matter how strong the rest.

Course Agenda

One Pillar Per Day, Then the Full Gate

Each day pairs pillar teaching with a grading workshop on a distinct company case — five companies, five sectors.

DAY 1The Gate

What Readiness Really Is — and the Readiness Gate

Why funding fails, assessment vs coaching, the Five Pillars and four-level Scale, evidence-first grading — then grading Pillar 1 (Governance & Structure) on a food producer whose entangled finances hide a real business.

DAY 2Financial

Financial Readiness

What investor-grade numbers look like at SME scale: reliable accounts, unit economics, projections that survive scrutiny, cash discipline — graded on an edtech whose messy books make real performance unknowable.

DAY 3Operational

Operational & Team Readiness

Delivery capability, key-person exposure, documented processes, and the team beneath the founder — assessed on a capable manufacturer where every process lives in the owner's head.

DAY 4Market

Market & Traction Readiness

Separating traction that persuades capital from numbers that only look like it: demand evidence, vanity metrics, concentration, and competitive position — graded on a D2C brand grown on discounting and one platform's algorithm.

DAY 5Capstone

Deal Readiness + Full-Gate Capstone

The investment story, data room, valuation expectations, and owner alignment — then the capstone: a complete Readiness Gate assessment of an agritech SME, end to end, to a verdict and roadmap.

Who It's For

  • Advisors, consultants, and accelerator/incubator staff who assess and coach companies toward investment
  • Founders, owners, and CFOs of startups and SMEs preparing to raise — who need to see their business as capital will see it
  • Corporate development and SME-support professionals who must triage many companies consistently
